Making Work Pay - Economic Recovery Payment

Is there any way to confirm whether or not I received the Economic Recovery Payment that is associated with the making Work Pay credit?

The payment would have been sent out with Social Security payments, but I started receiving SS in May of 2009, with the first payment received in June of 2009, and I think the economic recovery payments were sent only to people who were receiving SS before that date.

I have no record of such a payment, but then again SSA does not provide any payment records. My monthly SS payments are sent directly to my bank, and there is no records there of such a deposit, but perhaps this special payment was sent by paper check for higher impact.

If you did not receive SS benefits in Nov-Dec 2008 or January 2009 you most likely DID NOT receive the special payment. Check NO on Line 10 of your Schedule M (value = 0.00).

My regular SS payment was deposited directly to my checking account on May 4, 2009. The ERP of $250 was deposited on May 7. It was shown as a separate transaction and marked as ERP in the Memo field. If you don't see a separate deposit entry marked as ERP, I would guess that you did not get it.

IRS has developed a procedure for checking whether or not you received the payment.

Per IRS QuickAlert--

Subject: Did I Receive a 2009 Economic Recovery Payment?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The IRS developed the "Did I Receive an Economic Recovery Payment?" look up tool which gives taxpayers an easy way to determine if they received the one-time ERP payment and which agency made the payment.

Beginning March 8, 2010, taxpayers can call 866-234-2942 to access the phone application. The Web application will be available in late March on IRS.gov.

Taxpayers who had earned income in 2009 or are government retirees and received an Economic Recovery Payment need to report whether or not they received an ERP and the amount when they prepare their Schedule M, Making Work Pay and Government Retiree Credits.

The one time $250 ERP was paid to individuals in the following categories:

a.. Retirees, disabled individuals and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients receiving benefits from the Social Security Administration, b.. Disabled veterans receiving benefits from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, and c.. Railroad Retirement beneficiaries. Using the IRS look up tool taxpayers will have to enter three pieces of information to determine if they received an ERP:

a.. SSN b.. Date of birth c.. Zip code from the last filed return A separate telephone call or Web inquiry must be made for each taxpayer, even if filing a joint tax return.

Thanks. The line confirms what I had determined myself.

However, as I was entering my information I thought that I should go to the IRS web site to confirm the telephone number. Posting a message like this with a bogus number would be a great way to steal SSNs and matching birth dates, as long as the thief was willing to invest in a voice response system.
