moving expense

I moved from one state to another and then started my job in 2008. I had to stay in a hotel for 8 days before I could find an apartment. I only have some receipts for hotel, parking, internet and U-Pack, but not all of them now. I do have credit card statements showing all of the charges except the first three-day parking which I paid by cash.

I think the four types of cost are eligible for moving expense deduction, am I right?

Do I have to have official receipts as proof? I doubt I can get any receipt from the hotel now since it was in Jan. 2008.

Thank you,

-Kevin

In my opinion, the hotel is not deductible. Only hotels you stayed in during your move from your original home to your new home would be deductible, which would happen if you were driving and needed to stay overnight. And parking fees, tolls, you paid during your move are deductible. The mileage rate for moves on Jan 1 2008 was 19 cents a mile, but if your truck was not gas efficient deduct the actual gasoline costs instead of the standard mileage. Fines you incurred during your move such as speeding and parking tickets and not deductible I think because penalties are not deductible. Was the internet an integral part of the move itself? If it was just for after you arrived in your new city, it is not deductible. U-Pack is certainly deductible. Meals you paid along your trip are not deductible.

Yes. Deductions may be allowed without receipts, but you need other ways to prove that your expense occurred and was reasonable, though it's a bit of a battle. Original receipts are always better. You can probably get one from UHual.
