Moving expense questions

Hello, I have read pub 521 and still have 2 questions about deducting moving expenses.

  1. If I incur moving expenses on Jan 1 2008, can I deduct them on my
2007 tax return? I moved at the end of Dec 2007 and have reciepts from Dec 30, Dec 31, Jan 1 and Jan 2.

  1. I put my family (including a 2 year old) in a hotel the day before the move to keep them out fo the way while the movers loaded the truck. Does that day count as a deductible expense? Or is it only hotel stays starting on the day you actually move?

thanks. Kooner.

Timing is everything. You have moving expenses for 2007 and 2008.

I would suggest it is all part of the move.

Nope.

Take them in 2008.

Start that 2008 tax file now.

Then you deduct them in each of the two years. ie: when paid.

I see it as a reasonable part of the moving cost. See the instructions for Form 3903.

I can't agree with you Paul. The day before is not an integral part of the move itself; rather just for convenience. In fact it sounds more like a temporary living expense; not deductible.

If I read the statement correctly, it was the day of loading the truck, just not the day the truck necessarily drove away which imo is a move. In that position, I'd take it and make them make me give it back! :) (That, of course, is personal opinion, not accountant advice since I'm not).
