Nursing home expenses

Nursing home payments My mom (88) went into the nursing home last year due to Alzheimer?s. The cost is almost $4000 a month. How much of these costs can I deduct on her tax return. She does have income from royalties. We live in Albuquerque, NM. Any help is appreciated. Marion

Hi, Marion. Given the medical diagnosis, it appears to me that her nursing home care is fully deductible as a Schedule A item (subject to the 7.5% of AGI reduction).

Assuming she pays it fully - as in no insurance reimbursement, LTC payments, etc......all of it should be Schedule A deductions as medical expenses, subject to the 7.5% floor as mentioned earlier. Add it in with any other medical / insurance expense she incurred.

This reminds me of my father who, towards the end of his life, spent some time in a very nice LTC facility.

One of the things he enjoyed saying to visitors was, "I hate being in this damned place, but let me tell you about my taxes."

Also I seem to remember the necessity of having a doctor's statement in file attesting to the necessity.
