Oregon Registered Domestic Partners

Last year the Oregon legislature enacted a Family Fairness Act (House Bill 2007), effective January 1, 2008, which creates the legal status of Registered Domestic Partners in Oregon and extends to such partners all of the rights and benefits that are available to married couples, including the filing of Oregon individual income tax returns as married couples. The Oregon Department of Revenue has just issued guidelines for the filing of 2008 returns by Oregon RDPs:

As in California,Oregon RDPs must file joint or MFS or surviving spouse returns inOregon and are not eligible to file as single individuals. I believe an initiative to repeal the Family Fairness Act has qualified for the November ballot in Oregon.

9#more-199 Concerned Oregonians tried and failed in 2007 to get Measure 303 on that year's fall ballot. They have a court challenge, Lemons v. Bradbury, on appeal to the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals which, if decided in CO's favor, could result in the issue appearing on this year's ballot. At this point, the 9th Circuit appears to be CO's only hope of a repeal vote this year.
