Paperless

Despite having over fifty years experience in using and programming computers, the post-card that I got today from the IRS was a shock. It also did not make clear to me what my options were. So I went to IRS.GOV and tried to find out. It spoke about e-file. Does this require buying tax software? If so, does this software handle things like Form 2555 (foreign income exclusion), foreign tax credit, and the like? It says that you can used free-file if your adjusted gross income is under $57,000, but how can you know that until you fill out Schedules D, C, F, 2555 and who knows what else? It also spoke about Free File Fillable forms. From what I was able to gather that is similar to filling out each form from a downloaded copy, but the IRS keeps the forms itself as you fill them out. Is that so? What about the various worksheets in the 1040 booklet, such as the Foreign Earnled Income Tax worksheet? I have also been filling out the tax forms for my kids. Can I continue to do that with several different accounts simultaneously? I have been either using the printed forms, downloading the forms, or filling in and printing the forms. But I give his completed return to each kid to check over and sign. How would I manage something similar?

I'm not aware of any free file company that allows the use of Form 2555.

Free file fillable forms allow you to fill-in the data on each form or schedule you need; print a copy for your records and electronically file the return. As there is no software, you are required to know how to fill out each form and make the calculations that are outside of the scope of what the IRS calls "Do the Math" calculations. E.g., it will subtract the standard deduction; it will not calculate the tax liability; and it will not calculate a line that has a reference to some other form or schedule. If you need worksheets, you can use the worksheet that comes in the form instructions. The worksheets are not electronically filed.

Free file fillable forms requires an account for each taxpayer. Once you finish the return, you can give each child access to his/her account where they can review the return before it is "finished" and filed.

I'm assuming what you got was Notice 1400, "Tax Package Information for Individuals".

It was *very* clear on what your options were, including three bulleted options for obtaining paper forms, and a toll-free phone number to call after Jan 10, 2011 for help.

Did you actually read it?

You can still do all of that. You can also download the Form

1040 instructions, with all of the worksheets in it.
