Professional Training (Dog Grooming) Deduction.

Hi.

I hope someone can help me with my granddaughter's tax forms.

Last year she took a course in Dog Grooming, as a start to a career in the vet support business. She is now employed as a groomer, and the course was a required pre requisit for employment.

Is the cost of that course deductible as a professional expense, and if so where does it go on the form?

Thanks in advance

Did she take the course after getting the job? Or did she take it before so that she could qualify to apply?

If she took the course so that she would have the background to get into the business, it's not deductible. If she already had the job when she took the course, I'd think she could.

If she already had the job when she took the course and she was an employee, the deduction is subject to the 2% of AGI rule, which usually makes it pretty useless.

This may be eligible for the Tuition and Fees adjustment, even if it was to allow her to enter a new occupation. It just has to be an "eligible institution"
