Tax Software

For many years I have been using TaxCut. However, my return has gotten simpler and the price of the software has gotten greater. However, I don't want to do them manually, and have a state return to file.

Is Tax Act any good? The price seems good.

Many states allow you to e-file online directly with the state. Have you checked the online site for your state tax or revenue dept. to see if they offer that functionality?

The free federal efile version at taxact.com is good. State efiling through taxact.com is $13.95 more. This will be my second year using Taxact.com for free federal e-filing. I helped a friend use it last year, too.

A few weeks ago I also tried taxslayer.com with a friend as we completed her fairly simple return (1040 with Schedule A only). Taxslayer.com's total cost for federal and state is $9.95. Lots on the net like it, too. I think taxslayer.com is actually a bit easier to use and navigate. The only caveat I would give on taxslayer is that, to preview one's 1040, know to click on the "calculate/print return" button, and then the "create a pdf file" button.

Remember many states also provide free efiling of one's state return through their respective state tax department's web site.

Thanks for the info. I really don't care much about the efiling, since mail has always worked for me. Something such as taxslayer doesn't appeal to me since I would prefer something that is resident on my computer, so I don't have to rely on sometimes slow internet response times.

I don't know what qualifies as simple, but I've been using Tax Act on- line for a couple of years, with schedule a,b,d, and the first year the child care form. Takes me roughly 2 hours, altho that does not include scouring the house for the #(*^$( forms or paperwork that my DH misfiled....
