Tax Help From Intuit

Readers of this group will remember that I have (ad nauseum) posted about my travails of figuring out taxes for my wife, who is a Canadian citizen/resident, and I. I'm kind of frustrated that after 35 years of doing my own taxes, and knowing all the rules and tricks pretty well (from reading groups like this!, and similar material) I've found something I can't cope with on my own.

Apparently Intuit has hired a bunch of CPA's and EA's to provide tax assistance to TurboTax customers during tax season. At least in theory, with my $50 purchase of TurboTax, I get expert tax assistance for free.

I'll let you all know how it turns out.

While on the subject, though, in one of my calls with Intuit I spoke to someone in customer service (not one of the "tax experts") who told me that since my wife lives in Canada, that I had to MFS. She also told me that her supervisor said the same thing. It was kind of disappointing to have ANYONE at a company selling tax software insisting on such a completely wrong answer. It would have been OK to admit they didn't know, but to have them insist on a wrong answer was depressing. It was even worse since my wife is now a legal resident of the US, although we were going to elect to have her treated as a resident anyway. (But she still lives in Canada.)
