Tax Preparer Sentenced

OKLAHOMA CITY-- A tax preparer was sent to prison for three years and a month after pocketing his clients money instead of paying it to the Internal Revenue Service. Rhett E. Arterburn, 64, of Oklahoma City was also ordered Thursday to pay his victims $501,891 in restitution. U.S. District Court Judge Ralph G. Thompson said Arterburn apparently is broke, and will not likely be able to pay his victims. Arterburns clients still must pay their taxes, but prosecutor Kerry Kelly said the government is willing to work with the victims to try to reach a just settlement that may be below the actual amount owed.

Sounds like a real case of "arteryburn", well, "heartburn" anyway. Last week a fellow who operated (past tense) on of those "fast tax" places over in Columbus was being interviewed by local tv station crew. Seems like there were complaints from customers about not getting their promised refunds in a reasonable amount of time (you know, 24-48 hours). So the tv interviewer wanted to know why. During the interview, here comes the city narco squad, the IRS, and the Georgia revenoors in for a bust. It appears, "alledgely", that he was using the refunded amounts to buy meth a.. mines, something like that, for resale, all the while "refunding" to customers using his own company checks (not a recognized financial institution.)
