About 5 months ago I asked about how to handle a state audit (by mail) into my deductions.
Most people recommended I document the big ones and not bother with the small ones. Well, I disregarded your advice and documented the 90% I could. It took 180 pages and maybe 30 hours of work. That doesn't include the work that all the people I called for copies of invoices had.
Without any comment the state conceded the expenses and gave me my full refund in only 4 months. I wonder if they ever even looked at the submission. I wonder if they ever even intended to look at it.
But I learned some lessons that might pay off in the future. I now keep copies of everything. That may pay off someday.
