Turbo Tax E-file Rejected -- R0000-504-02

The e-filing of turbo tax was rejected by IRS because dependent's name does not match what IRS has on its records. Because IRS checks the SSA database for names, we will have to get with SSA to get the name corrected.

In the meantime, it has been suggested that we file a paper return since the e-file will continue to be rejected until we get the name on SSA database fixed which takes a while. We plan to do that but because we gave a credit card on Turbo Tax E-File, the amount due to the IRS has already been charged to the card.

So the question is what do we do with the 1040-V? Include it when we mail the

1040 with a note that says amount due already paid by credit card with a copy of the credit card statement showing the payment?

If you paid by credit card, you do not send a 1040-V with your return. The IRS has the payment and should have applied it to your account. Just show the amount of the payment as the balance due on line 78.

When I search the OnLine Turbo Tax Community, I see the following answer from a Turbo Tax employee:

"The amount that was owed on the rejected return will not be debited from your account. When a tax return is rejected no payment or refund is processed."

Other people on the forum say the card will be charged even if e-file is rejected so I'm not sure what the correct answer is.

Have you tried checking with your card issuer to see whether the charge has been posted to your account?

Check with the issuer and see if it has been posted. At least from my experience it showed up almost immediately.

I have had a check to the IRS post to my account with a date prior to its mailing, so yes, the IRS can be prompt when it wants to.

Doe this for one of my kids who reported that it showed up as "pending" so I assume it will end up as "posted"

Also made the same payment through 1040paytax so I assume that the IRS will get two payments and kids will have to call IRS to get a refund of one of the payments?

The payment to IRS from TurboTax (made on Wednesday) still shows pending but the payment to 1040paytax shows posted. Hard to say what happens next.

Pending charges do not always convert to real charges. A standard procedure is to make a pending charge to confirm that the card is good, but only finalize the charge when the purchase (in this case tax return accepted) is complete.

I have NO actual knowledge of how Turbo Tax does this - I'm just saying you can't be sure the pending charge will convert to a real charge.

For the record, we stopped trying to e-file with Turbotax after the third rejection and filed a paper return instead. The original e-file was to be paid by credit card and the amount to be paid showed up as "pending" on the credit card account. As of this morning (4/19), the amount showing as "pending" has been removed from the credit card account. Hooray!!
