Voluntarily getting an IP PIN?

With all the identity stuff happening these days I was thinking of proactively signing up for the IRS IP PIN program.

But before doing so I wanted to ask what disadvantages or hassles one might experience being in it since (as I understand it) once you're in you can't leave.

Thanks!

I did it a couple of years ago. Filing my 2019 return, I had terrible troubles with Credit Karma because it couldn't handle the PIN correctly. Eventually I gave up and filed a paper return.

For my 2020 return, I used he IRS Free File, specifically TurboTax. I didn't know that once you're in IP Pin you can't get out, so my electronic return got rejected. But TurboTax guided me to what the problem was, and fortunately the IRS website let me retrieve the new IP Pin it had generated for my 2020 return. Next year I'll remember to do that first!

Even with the minor hassles, to me it's worth it knowing that some scammer can't file a bogus return using my name and SSN.
