5.4% is this the best mini cash ISA?

Alliance and Leicester have a new direct mini cash ISA, internet access type, paying 5.4% for a pound upwards. Can this be beaten (see below for a snag with this a/c though)?

Info:

It all looks good BUT there appears to be hidden away in the terms and conditions that there is a 25 quid charge if you subsequently transfer out to another provider. :-(

See the user guide at

userguide#payingin (probably have to repair the URL)

where it states

How can I transfer my Direct ISA funds to an ISA with another provider?

*SNIP details* There will be a charge for this service. See our Tariff for Additi Transfer of variable rate/fixed rate ISA to another institution............................................... 25

Perhaps this would be covered by the new provider should you want to move money?

Anyway, anyone better this account?

Without a hint of irony, Matt Wilson astounded uk.finance on 04 Feb 2005 by announcing:

Looks like it's the leader. Abbey's close behind with 5.35%, M&S with 5.25%, then a few from 5.2% down to 5.10%.

IF's currently 5%, I believe, although you can get a higher rate if you also have a loan with them (see previous thread on this subject). I'm currently getting 6.9% on most of mine.

So on 3,000 you are 1.50 a year better off until you transfer out, at which point you are 23.50 down...

Given that the interest on 3,000 is only 162 a year this strikes me as a major hit to take.

You might be interested to know that if you need to quote a long URL, there's a convention that lets you do that without breaking it over lines. Quote it as . So, yours would look like this: .

Any compliant mail- or news-reader program should show this all on one line, or at least honour it as a single URL when clicked upon in a windowing environment.

Hope this helps.

BTW...watch out for First Direct's 6.25% Mini Cash ISA when it's announced next week. The quoted rate is only available for up to 8 months, after which it is likely to go down to 4.5% - but at that point you could switch provider, assuming there are no onerous transfer fees.

Yes, they accept transfers in, but not if you hold more than 3k + interest :(
