Advice which mortage broker

I'm a potential first time buyer not experienced with mortage. Can anyone recommend a mortage advisor (broker). Has anyone experience with 'Alexander Hall'

Many thanks

Is he Albert's brother? (Sorry)

Haven't heard of them/him, but there are several thousand. Look round you local area and find someone independent and make sure that they cover the whole market rather than a group of lenders that is representative of the whole market.

Some brokers will offer to search through all hundred-odd lenders. Whereas others will have a panel of say twenty or thirty. Whereas Acme Bank will only tell you about Acme mortgages.

You also need to consider how you are going to pay for advice. Some will want to charge a fee, some will take a commission ('procuration fee') from the lender, some will offer you a choice of the two.

If you tell us where in the country you are someone might have a localish suggestion.

Surely, using a mortgage broker is pretty much the same whoever they are.

They can't charge you (IIRC, except for 5 pounds) unless you actually take the mortgage, and if you don't like the deal on offer you walk away. Once you've taken (or not) the mortgage your relationship with the broker ends.

Latest regs mean there are now different classes of broker and many that used to be 'independent' now arent. Charcol Online for example.

To be Independent they need to have access to 'whole of market', not just their selection from the 'whole of market' and offer a service option in which they refund the commission and charge a fee only.
