Best way to get holiday money

I know that many companies offer "no commission" on foreign currency, but their rates seem very poor (obviously they need to get their "profit" somehow). I remember seeing some postings previously about the best way is to use a Nationwide account, but can't remember whether this was a Nationwide debit card or credit card. If a debit card, I would have thought that the foreign bank would be getting some form of payment, no?

Any advice appreciated (holiday destination, Spanish mainland, if it makes a difference)

If you take money out a cash machine, the foreign bank may well charge you something for it, but Nationwide won't.

If you are taking cash, then use the debit card as you won't pay interest or the cash advance fee.

If you are buying things in a shop, use the credit card as you get an interest free period before you have to pay for it. Make sure the shop doesn't convert to GBP for you at a less favourable rate.
