I notice in the Housing Benfit application form the claimant is asked whether they are related to the landlord. If the answer is "yes" - what, if any, effect does this have on the benefit entitlement?

I guess it could have the effect of getting turned down for HB if the nature of the relationship is such that it might be assumed the tenant is a dependant of the landlord, and that the landlord, rather than the state, should be supporting the "tenant". In other words, but for the possible availability of HB, the landlord would not expect the tenant to pay rent.
What does this have to do with BTL?
Thanks - in my imagined scenario the tenant is the parent of the landlord(!) and sorry, yes, rather obtusely, has nothing to do with BTL at all, other than the potential landlord is toying with the idea of a BTL with the parent as the tenant. The tenant is currently living elsewhere with Housing Benefit elegibility, but I would hate to go through the hassle of setting up a BTL and move the parents just to see the benefit disappear!
Yes, lets not have folks supporting their parents. The rest of us are happy to pay.

Hmm, perhaps the parents are entitled to their benefits having paid in all their lives...perhaps the offspring can't support the parents any other way...perhaps you are being sarcastic for the fun of it to look clever whilst making a snide comment about people who receive such benefits and the state of affairs in general, when really you aren't always correct in your perception of a scenario?
And perhaps some of us do what is best for our parents without considering what happens to the state payout.

Donno about you Toom, but I reckon I owe my parents about 18 year's worth of bills-paid, food-supplied, washing-done, rent-free accomodation...
ISTR the state made some contribution to that too, in the form of Child Benefit, but it cost them more than that...
rgds, Alan
And like I said, perhaps not all of us can support our parents without considering state assistance through benefits...lucky you / stupid you, if you don't have to consider it / don't want to consider that, that's all I say.
If you say no what checks are done? What if the landlord is a company set up to deal with renting properties?
Do they have the powers to investigate cases they suspect of being dodgy?
