buying US dollars

I want to buy some US$ either in cash or travellers cheques. What is the cheapest option and can anyone recommend a good low-commission deal anywhere?

Thanks,

Roland.

Depending on volume, Post Office?

Marks and Spencer. If you have an M&S storecard. No commission, a good rate, and no charge for credit until your next statement if you clear the balance.

Put the money in a Nationwide current account, and withdraw the money out of a machine when you get there.

Go and open a Nationwide Flex account which allows you to use your card in the US at most ATMs - they do not charge commission. Best advice I got from this NG.

Of course, if you are buying now because you think the Pound will go lower then... no idea - sorry.

Any visa supported debit card allows you to withdraw from an ATM. Although Alliance & Leicester may not charge you commission, US banks invariably charge you for using their ATM, typically 1.50 but can be up to $3-5

Yes, forgot to say - take a wad out in one go when you get over there to avoid the charges - made that mistake first time I went.

I have a flexaccount, so I may try that. But yes, it is because I believe the dollar is rallying and I go off to the USA in October.
