Can anybody suggest which places offer the best exchange rates and lowest commission charges for $GBP conversions?

No, nobody can, because no such places exist.

Or did you mean to ask "Can anybody suggest which places offer the best exchange rates and which places charge the lowest commission rates?"?

That's a different question (well, pair of questions, really) altogether, and you will probably find no overlap between the two lists of answers.

Given a specified amount, there is a correct answer but I intended to find out about the two separately. High street banks are a rip-off and there must be some alternatives.

comission free exchange at the post office.

Of course the comission is built into the rate so you would think that it's only any good for small amounts, but when I wanted to change some money they quoted me the same rate as the bank did (so yes, the bank was an even bigger rip-off)

Hi Roy,

Just been shopping around for some Euros today and (surprisingly) found Lunn Poly seemed to be offering the best high street deal (inc. $). There exchange rate was pretty much the same as the others but no commission for travellers cheques or currency.

They also buy them back commission free, although I've never come back off holiday with any money left before!

Best Wishes,

Can you give details?

These days, for most purposes the only foreign currency needed is euros and dollars. AS you and I seem to grin very little back I cant see any benefit in a a buy back scheme.

Hi John,

Well I just checked the window displays of Thomas Cook, Going Places and Lunn Poly. They were all 1.42 something to the pound, but only Lunn Poly were commission-free. One of the others - can't remember which - was charging £2 commission.

Thanks for that Jeff,

I misunderstood you in so far as I thought you may have been including the PO and High Street Banks.

Best deal on foreign currency I found a few months ago was at M&S. This was compared to high st banks and travel agents. However, I did get slightly better rates from my credit card (though that could have been caused by a fluctuation in rates while I was away.)

And Swiss Francs, unfortunately - it may be a while before Switzerland joins the euro :)
