Can I claim any benefits?

Mar 27, 2010 6 Replies

Hi,

I have living off my own capital for three years. Then last week, I bought a house to live in. Now I am broke. In fact I owe the bank 3000, as the cost of moving in was higher than expected.

I have just been offered a job working at weekends (16 hours, I guess) for

6 an hour. This will hardly be enough to live on, as I need transport as my house is a little remote, and there are household bills and council tax to pay.

Will the job disqualify me from claiming Jobseekers allowance? Are ether any other benefits I can claim?

Would I be better off turning down the job and claiming jobseekers allowance?

Many thanks

Al

I don't know what your circumstances are or how many people live with you. You should make an appointment at the Citizens Advice (CAB)

and contact the department of working pensions

they are the agencies who can advise you properly.

Yes it will disqualify you from claiming Jobseeker's allowance. You might be able to claim Working Tax Credit, but from the limited information you gave, probably not. You should be able to get Council Tax Benefit.

I would have thought turning down the job would also disqualify him.

The big problem I see here is convincing the powers that be that he didn't deliberately put himself in a position that needed recourse to public funds, or at least that he has acted so as to minimise the amount of public funds required.

I've heard of other people, in such situations, renting out the house and living in a bedsit.

uk.gov.social-security is the best place to ask....

I thought you could work 16 hours and still get some benefits?
