Cash Machine Withdraw Fees..

I find it hard to believe the number of extra customers that supermarkets get because they have a cash machine, exceeds double figures (in total, not per location).

I rather suspect that people use the machine because it's at the supermarket, not got to the supermarket becaue it has a machine. I.e all of the benefit is with the machine operator and almost none with the shop.

I can see that a small shop might get extra trade because a machine is inside rather than outside, but not a big supermarket.

That is obvious and is my point. The cost of supply and installation to a small shop is generally not just justified on the basis of extra sales. That is why a private ATM co. supplies and installs the machines and they make their profit by charging the user. In addition, most cards used in the ATMs will also work as a debit card at the shop till so most users dont need any extra cash to buy goods in the shop.

That contradicts your statement 'the benefit to the operator is the same'. If the operator is a Bank then any benefit ot gets MUST be an issue especially as the bank machine generally wont charge but the privately owned one will

Yes, but they dont own and run the machine. Their only perceived benefit is to get people into the shop. If the nachine costs the shop nothing then its a win win for them. My point is that the charge has to be levied by the private ATM owner for them to make a profit.

Yes, its a stand alone operation using far smaller and less secure machines.

Agreed, but the operation is a different brand the bank that owns it (it doesnt say RBS on it) and it charges a fee, for all the reasons stated above.

Or in the case of at least one fee charging ATM round here, about 5 meters to the Woolwich branch next door.

I suppose it would, and that would probably be a good thing.

If notes come out of a bank, is there not a stronger guarantee of genuineness, or at least a smaller likelihood that you will get fakes, than if they come out of a shop till?
