Cig Imports.

Hi all. Cigs in the Philippines cost 2.50 for a carton of 200 so significant savings to be had. I have got relatives in the Philippines (wife's side) Can I ask them to send a box of say, 20 cartons of cigs and avoid various taxes and duties?

Thanks.

How would this avoid tax and duty? The package would still have to pass UK customs when it arrived, and that's assuming it even makes it past the bunch of thieves in the Philippines postal system.

I am familiar with the PI postal pinching service. I'd have the package sent by DHL or similair.

ISTR reading that there is an excemption for a small number of packets genuinely sent as a 'gift' from a person know to you.

Can't remember where I read it though

When I've sent envelopes containing documents from the Philippines to the UK via DHL its cost me at least 2,200 Pesos (around £25). Packages containing commercial items would cost quite a bit more than that. Even if you were able to get a small quantity in tax and duty free I wonder if the savings would cover the shipping costs.

Usually two packets (40). And only once or twice a year to the same recipient.
