Do any UK banks allow Russian nationals to open accounts?

Hi

I have a friend in Russia (a Russian national) who would like to open a Sterling personal bank account in the UK to deposit savings in a currency that's more stable that the rouble.

Firstly, is it possible with any UK bank? Should the account be off-shore? Is it possible to even have this person as a name on a joint account with me?

Thanks Chris R.

A Russian friend of mine did that when she wanted to leave some sterling which she had in a safe haven, during a visit to the UK. That was in 1989, before they got so fussy about the money laundering business. The account was in her name, and I was authorised to operate it for her. She eventually married a German and settled in Germany, at which stage the funds were transferred to a German bank for her by me.

Hi Terry

Thanks for the speedy reply. Any idea which the best (most friendly) banks are/were for that kind of thing?

I have tried online banks (Smile & Cahoot) and some highstreet banks without much luck. The online ones just say no - outright. While the high-street ones all seem to want to direct me to offshore banking, which I am a very wary of (but not sure why - other than the tax declaration problems).

Thanks Chris

There's nothing wrong with Barclays off shore (Isle of Man) I've been using them for years
