egg - automated anti-fraud calls?

Hi.

My wife says she got an automated call from egg today asking to verify some transactions. After putting in an identifying piece of info for me as I'm the acct holder (NOT the card number) it apparently rattled off a number of transactions on our account and asked for confirmation by pressing a key.

Is this a new thing? Never run into it before?

Thanks. Garry

Sounds like a phishing scam to me. Report it to egg, and make sure you do whatever needs doing to stop money leaving your account.

Unlikely if it they listed legit transactions.

definately sounds like something to tell Egg where to go on though, automated diallers calling you are not something to encourage!

It is an egg feature but the problem is how can you tell whether it is a scam or not. Another egg feature is sending your PIN to a pc screen, location unknown at the point of sending, for anybody nearby to see, having conveniently asked the requester for the 3 digit card security code just to prove that the requester is in a position to scoot off to the cash machine seconds later. Bad security, daft feature.

Not necessarily - you may be scaring the OP without good reason.

This sounds exactly like a system that Halifax use with their credit cards....

I asked Egg about it as well, here's the body of the reply...

"Recently, we put a notice on your statement reminder e-mail to let you know that we've developed an automated anti-fraud system that allows us to quickly pick-up on suspicious transactions. We use an interactive system that makes outbound calls to verify use of your card. This system is designed to protect you without stopping you from using your Egg Card for genuine transactions.

More details about our new anti-fraud system can be found by following the link below.

Just because Halifax use it as well as Egg does not make it desirable. For security they ought to ask you to phone back on their regular number, so you jknow you are talling to the real bank and not a phisher.

Did I say this system is "desirable"? I don't think so! [See below.] I merely pointed out that Jonathan may be unnecessarily alarming the OP by suggesting it was a phisher.

Which is why, when one of the two above banks phoned me with an automated system, I simply hung-up and called them back myself...
