Bloody Banks!

Tried to make a one off payment to Egg this morning before my 0% interest offer ends. Input my Switch details from my One Account (with RBS) and got a message telling me that the payment had been refused and I should contact my bank.

Did so, and was told that this was because the switch card had been cancelled. Replied this was news to me and asked why. Glib reply was that a new card had been issued by Switch in mid September and old card was automatically cancelled, and oh by the way it was taking 6 weeks for cards to be sent out.

Pointed out that this could have been a real problem if for example I had filled my car with petrol then had the card refused. Also pointed out that it would be a nice idea if they didn't cancel old cards until new ones had been confirmed as received by customer. Further pointed out that this card was linked to a mortgage account with a bloody big pot of cash available (my blood runs cold when I think about it) and that it was now TEN weeks since mid September and no card has shown up....was told to ring back at end of week if no card shown up......Jeez I'm furious.

Got them to make a CHAPS payment free of all charges to pay Egg - but am really angry at attitude to debit cards......anybody else suffered this?

Happened to me

Card expired new card didnt arrive reported missing

6 weeks later still no card and now no cash as missing card was being used fraudlulantly to buy a laptop

Did I get an apology . no just a sarky letter about me being responsible form the whereabouts of my card. Same bank as well

Useless

If you don't officially complain then banks will take this as being acceptable.

Tell them you want an apology and ask them what right they have to cancel an old card without first ensuring you have a replacement. Ask them for their opinion on your predicament this morning and tell them your opinion and that unless they change their policy where old cards are not cancelled by them and left to expire or be cancelled by the customer then you intend to take your business to a proper bank that looks after their customers.

Tell them that you don't mind when registering your new card if they ask you whether they can cancel your old card, but this is never to be presumed.

Obviously you can tell them what you want and you also have the right to lump it and do nothing.

Never experienced this situation myself mind.

Yes, I had the same problem with Natwest.

Same here. Reported the new card missing, got another one about a month later. Another month later another one arrived, although I didn't open that envelope until I'd been shopping and had my card cancelled. Moving to Cahoot now - this was the last straw.

Had trouble with that bank too. They could never change my address until the second or third letter telling them to. Once the address they used was wrong so my new card was returned to them but they were unable to send it out without a change of address letter. Several phone calls - because they had had two letters! Lies from staff who said "I have now sent it out!". When it came it took a week to be activated!

In the mean time I received a cheque following the sale of a house which I paid in to the account. (The embarrassed cashier said she had to ask where it came from for Money Laundering regs.) I went to the local Yorkshire BS, got the forms and opened a postal saver account, sent them a big cheque from the RBS account, waited forthe passbook, LINK card and PIN to arrive and thus got at my cash faster than from the RBS!

Without a hint of irony, "candl" astounded uk.finance on 01 Dec 2004 by announcing:

A colleague has just had the same experience with NatWest, 3 days before he was due to fly to the US for 2 weeks.
