Have I paiod my SA tax correctly?

I had intended on doing my SA return online, but I left insufficient time to wait for the PIN to arrive (before I left for my oversaes posting), so I filled in the form and handed it in to my local office on about Jan 7.

I then calculated the tax due as about 1200 GBP and paid that us "Tax Return received 14 Jan. You have overpaid tax of 1200, click here to arrange a refund."

Did I do the right thing? Was there a box on the form that I should have tickeed to say that I was making the payment? Should I have filled in another form to say why? Or is it just that they haven't checked my calculation and that this will sort itself out later when they do?

Anyone any ideas?

thanks

No absolute certainty, but it's pretty unlikely your [paper] return has been processed yet, hence HMRC's system thinks you've overpaid.

If you showed in your return (box 18.3) that a payment of 1,200 was due, but HMRC disagrees once they've processed it, they will write to you setting out their calculations.

I put nothing in Box 18.3. I hadn't the time to do the calculation before I handed the form in, and I didn't see a box that I had to put any numbers in.

Hm, what should I do now?

Wait a few weeks for them to take the return out of storage. You may have to appeal against a penalty if the input clerk forgets to enter the date received stamp information and uses the default date.

But even if the input clerk makes that error, it shouldn't give rise to a penalty, because tim (not at home) coughed up all the tax due by 31st Jan.

At least that's how I understand the system.

Yes, that's right, provided he hasn't miscalculated and coughed up a little less than is actually due.

Yes I did worry about that. The figure that I calculated was slightly lower than I expected and it was also just inside the limit for not having to pay "on account" for next year (oh, this year).

I note that they are planning on changing this rule for next year and enforcing the penalty for being late even if no tax is due, or have they scrapped that idea.

It's the first I've heard of it. I thought the penalty was £100 or the amount of tax underpaid, whichever is lower.

I do believe that they will accept phone calls with such queries.

If you go to HMRC consultations page:

One of the consultations is about a change in Penalties.

And one of the original proposals was for the 100 pound "late fine" to be payable irrespective of the amount of tax owing (basically this was just another stealth tax).

So I wondered if this proposal was still current. (I don't need you to read it and tell me, I can do that myself, I just wondered if anybody knew)

Yes, but I don't really want to hang on for 20 minutes at a call centre whilst making an international call on my PAYG mobile.

Similarly, the £100 penalty for a late partnership tax return became £100 per partner!
