Investment club software - COW2000 - query

Hi

Can any user of COW2000 help me with this please? One of our holdings has restructured, spinning off another PLC.

This reduces our holding in the orginal company, and means we have aquired shares, apparantly at no cost, in another.

How can this be entered into COW2000?

Not being able to see a proper method, I have entered a sale for no proceeds, but this makes it look like we have realised a loss, when we haven't.

I haven't had any response from COW2000 support.

Thanks Julian Aberdabadoo Investment Club

I think you should have 'acquired' for nil consideration, rather than 'sold'.

Thanks, John.

My immediate problem is with the parent company - the one where our holding is reduced.

For the spun-off company, I have entered a transaction to aquire the shares at 'no cost'. Though I realise this will not be right when we come eventually to dispose of these shares.

So any help will still be much appreciated.

Has the number of shares you hold in this company changed?

Yes, it has decreased.

As a matter of fact, I think I have now found the answer - I had to use the "Add to holding" function but enter a negative number of shares.

Obvious? Well, may be :-)

Thanks for your help. Julian

Another way would be to have sold the existing holding for a consideration equivalent of the opening price of the new holding.

I posted the same question on the Motley Fool

discussion board for Investment Clubs, and have the answer from the package's (retired) author.

His advice is to enter a "sell" for the entire holding for the orginal gross purchase price; then enter a "buy" for the new number of shares for the same gross cost.

Apparantly, the revenue is happy with this.
