Is there a way to tell how much ISA allowance one has used?

I doubt it very much.

Just about all of my money (as opposed to other assets) is directly connected to one of our two bank accounts. It's all managed on-line via on-line banking.

What 'records' apart from the on-line ones would you expect? I get annual statements from both in various pointless forms, mostly filed in the bin as they are more trying to sell me things than telling me anything useful.

Either paper or electronic records of your own, which you can reconcile against the on-line information.

I use an elderly version of Quicken to keep records of all my bank account and credit card transactions - plus investments. Works pretty well.

Life's too short! If I did that I'd never do anything else.

If you did that you wouldn't have to waste endless hours trying to work out where your money is!

I don't, I just get on with my life.

In that case, why did you start this thread?

Er, because I didn't want to spend a lot of time hunting around for the information if it was available directly from HMRC. I.e. I have better (as in more enjoyable) things to do.

I bet you *did* have to spend a lot of time hunting for the information nonetheless.

It's the same with domestic clutter - untidy people spend an inordinate amount of time looking for stuff.

No, I've simply not bothered to put any more money in this year, interest is such that it really isn't worth any big effort.

I don't have any financial clutter, again I say "that's why I asked the question". :-)

I think the OP's question (although he doesn't actually say this!) means he wants to know how much more he can subscribe this year rather than how muc h he has invested over the years. I make this assumption because he says he doesn't know how much he 'has left'. But the question is a bit ambiguous a nd I'm sorry if I've misinterpreted it.

You're absolutely right. I can't really see how "... how much allowance I have left" could mean anything else (but that's not to say that it *isn't* ambiguous).

Zackly..

I use an elderly version of MoneyManager, (or WinMoney as it has been called since it was updated to run under Windows. For the same reason). I want to know that the bank hasn't made errors.

That exact thing happened to me when I got my financial years mixed up whilst arranging mine, my wife's and my sister's ISA's. It was the usual "end of year" rush when in fact I had already sorted out that year's ISA for me at the beginning of the year and a few days after opening the one for the previous year.

Anyhow - letter from HMRC stating which one exceed the allowance and who it was with and a request to close it. No hassle, no penalty.
