Is this reasonable

Whe my husband died 2.5 years ago I was deeply distressed to find that his pension had no death benefit and that all I was entitled to was the return of the premiums paid.

The FA who came to see me took from me a copy of the death cert to pass to Eagle Star, the pension provider.

Since that time I have left messages frequently with the FA requesting information as to when I would be paid.

This week I wrote a "7 days or see you in court" letter and the reponse was instant.

Apparently ES have not paid because they have not had sight ot the letters of Probate - for which they never asked.

Is this fair and reasonable? My inclination is to report them to the FSA.

Had I died in the past two years, no doubt the monies would have "disappeared.

This kind of behaviour by insurance companies is all too common. It is a sad reflection of our social and cultural decline over the last forty years. Report them by all means to the FSA and should they be found to be negligent and the FSA ask them to pay compensation don't be too ready to agree to the suggested amount.

I should add that you should, personally check the rules of the scheme concerning death before retirement to make sure that the insurance company are not (unintentionally?) trying to swindle you. Most IFAs wouldn't do this, as most people do not have a copy of the rules.

Also, make sure that interest is added of at least 1/2% per month to the amount that was due 2.5 years ago.

Rubbish. Insurance companies have always been crooks.
