Most Credit Card companies used to offset any payments against the cheapest debt, thereby making themselves the most money. AFAIK this practise has now been outlawed and any payments must go to reduce the most expensive debt.

This is called "stoozing" and, IMHO, it is hardly worth doing now owing to such low interest rates.

Balance = 887.21 (yeah, yeah, Christmas expenditure)

Min payment = 23

If I make the minimum payment by the due date, estimated interest is.........wait for it, drum roll......22.94!!!

So I reduce my wife's debt by a whopping 0.06!!!!

God bless UK banks :-)

The answer is, do not used credit cards, use a debit card instead!

And, do not spend money you haven't got!

Do read the post before you reply Alan. The OP said ".....we always pay off in full so it's academic but here you go......"

That suggests to me that he has got the money and is using his credit card, as I do, to obtain short term interest free credit whist his own money is earning (bugger all) interest in the bank. Suggests he is managing his money for maximum benefit.
