QuickenWindow has stopped working

When I try to load my quicker data file into my quicken deluxe 2014 (installed in Windows 8.1) it crashes and I get an error message that says

"QuickenWindow has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available. "

I scanned the drives and there are no errors. Not sure what else to do.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Try holding down the CTRL key for then entire time while opening Q. That should cause it to open to a nearly blank window (only File and Help menus available). If that works, you've probably got a profoundly corrupt data file. You can try doing a FILE, File Operations, Validate and Repair ... being SURE to click both "Validate File" and "Rebuild Investing Lots" before you click OK.

If that didn't work, then your program itself is corrupt. Try downloading and installing the Q2014 R8 Mondo patch from here:

Thank you for replying.

It was the program files. I suspected that to be the case because the problems happened just after I got the popup window for a quicken update. So I deleted the quicken program folder and replaced it with a recent backup of that folder I had made on my external hard drive. That fixed it and it works correctly.

However, when closing I again got the popup asking whether I wanted to install the latest update or later. No choice to refuse! I clicked it shut without responding. Hope it didn't install anyway........

Afraid to install any updates. Why do I need the Mondo patch?

Unfortunately, when restarting it happened again. So the bad quicken update downloaded somewhere on my pc and keeps reinstalling itself! I need to find the download and delete it.

You need, at minimum, the Mondo ... because your backup program folder is corrupt also. AND, if the Mondo doesn't do the trick, you need to do a QCLeanUI ininstall of Q (a regular Win uninstall isn't sufficient), and re-install (NOT just re-copy) your Q program.

Also, there have been NO updates to Q2014 in over a year ... so it's not entirely clear what program update you're getting. Please do HELP, About Quicken and report the FULL release number shown there, Format is R ? (??.?.?.?)

Before the update my Quicken is Quicken Deluxe 2014 Release R 7 (23.1.7.6)

The mondo update updates to R8. But it creates problems and crashes.

So, I need to do whatever it takes to fix things. I've been fighting these problems since that first R8 update originally came out. That first automatic update messed up Quicken and it has never been right since.

"you need to do a QCLeanUI ininstall of Q (a regular Win uninstall isn't sufficient), and re-install (NOT just re-copy) your Q program."

OK. I'm ready. (desperate) Where do I find QCleanUI uninstall? I found the original Quicken_Deluxe_2014.exe file which must be the original file I downloaded from Intuit.

I located QCleanUI and msiclean from the intuit website and used it to clean everything. Rebooted and then reinstalled Quicken. Started up OK but when it loaded my data file, quicken crashed with the same error "QuickenWindow has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. etc."

From what you said earlier, that must mean my datafaile is badly corrupted. What do I do next?

Thanks for helping.

Question now is how can I validate or repair if the file cannot be opened?

Could not open the file but found out I can ask Quicken to validate without having the file opened. Result was "QDF: No errors." What now?

You can try a supervalidate. Do a regular validate, but hold down the CTRL and shift keys when you click OK.

OR, you can try restoring from an older backup file ... to see if you can find one that doesn't exhibit the problem.

OR, and this is really your last option, contact Q support.

That validation (by just pointing to the file went very fast and therefore may not have been a "real" validation, maybe because it could not load the file. I restored a backup from 10/1 and that restored file loaded up fine. So I ran validate on it. This validate took a very long time, checking for splits, broken transfers, etc.). (It is a 250 MB file). Then while it was "checking transactions for brocken transfers" for a very long time, it crashed with a popup that said "Com Error". Pressing the OK button on the popup just brought up the same popup. What a mess.

Last year, after an in-place install of Win 7 Home SP-1 64 bit, I had to reapply all updates which I did in 6 month groups by their update issue date, earliest first.

I use QP 2014 R8 (23.1.8.8) and it stopped working when I tested after applying a group of the updates. I uninstalled updates by most recent issue date until I could get Q working again and have not applied any since. Oldest NOT applied appears to be 08/12/14

I know this is not really a good idea but Q does work so I suggest that a recent update may be the problem for YOUR PC.

I think you are absolutely correct. My quicken 2014 worked fine until that darn r8 update (both just r8 and the mondo).

May I ask how you uninstall a specific quicken update? And then, how do you prevent intuit from applying their updates? When the quicken update popup appears the only options are to install now or later. Is there a setting that prevents updates.

Thanks for your input.

I am talking about WINDOWS updates, NOT Q

Finally SOLVED .

I'm not sure what did it but in case someone else finds themselves in a similar situation here's what I think did it.

I think the problem was caused by a faulty or partial download / install of the quicken r 8 update which then also caused a corruption of the data file.

The steps that fixed things:

  1. Complete uninstall and reinstall of quicken. Applied mondo update. (current datafile still crashed)
  2. Found a 6 week old backup that would load but sometimes crashed.
  3. Loaded and made a copy of that data file from within quicken which now loaded correctly. Accounts were all correct.
  4. Downloaded new transactions to bring up to date. Worked fine. No further crashes or errors even after pc reboots and multiple quicken reloads.

Thanks everyone for the helpful suggestions. Intuit should be embarrassed! If there was a decent alternative with download capability I would be gone.

Question: What do I do with all the fixlog files generated by my many validation attempts? How do I even open them. Can I just delete them?
