QB 2011 Pro problems

I have a desktop Windows 7 Pro 64-bit computer with QB Pro 2011. And, a laptop with Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit with QB Pro 2011.

The accountant brings backup files on a thumb drive. Quickbooks on the desktop stops working as soon as we try to restore from the backup. The same operations on the laptop work fine.

Then, to get Quickbooks to work at all on the desktop I have to rename qbwuser.ini.

So, I did that and created a Dummy Company. Then, I backed up the Dummy Company. Then, I tried to restore the Dummy Company and got "Quickbooks has stopped working".

So then, I uninstalled Quickbooks. Rebooted. Reinstalled Quickbooks. Opened Dummy Company just fine. Backed up Dummy Company. Restored Dummy Company and "Quickbooks has stopped working" again!!

At first we thought there might be something wrong with the thumb drive files even though they work on the laptop.

Also, on the desktop, Quickbooks seems to work fine other than the backup/restore process. That is, it seems we can open and work on company files .. at least the Dummy Company I set up. I haven't tried any others since reinstalling.

So now I'm stuck.... Any help, suggestions would be appreciated!

How much RAM is on each computer? On my win7 laptop I have 6G of RAM and am not having the issue you are.

Have you tried copying the backup file to the hard drive and then do the restore instead of accessing the file on the flash drive.

Laura,

Thanks for the reply.

Well, these are fairly new systems as Win 7 implies and they have 4-8GB of RAM. The QB databases aren't huge either.

I did have them copy the backup file to the desktop HD before trying to restore once more but that had no effect. Yet, this doesn't explain what happened next with the Dummy Company file which only ever resided on the desktop.

Are you able to backup and restore the dummy company or even a sample company file that comes with QuickBooks?

Hit ctrl + 1 and tell me what release 2011 you are running. I just was prompted to install R9. Maybe updating QB will fix things. Renaming the qbuser.ini as a fix was one of the issues fixed. see this page for more info:

One can back up the Dummy Company but the restore fails.

I'll have to reconnect with the computer to find out the rest.

Thanks,

QuickBooks Pro 2011 Release R9P

After upgrading to this release, I backed up the Dummy Company file. Upon restoring from the backup:

"QuickBooks has stopped working A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available." [Close program]

That is all......

Since I've already removed and reininstalled QB, I'm stumped.

This is the desktop, right? I am wondering if there is something significantly different (under the hood) bwt win7 Pro vs Home that is causing the problem. Mine is Home and only have this problem occasionally. It usually frees up and will complete the task.

As an update to last night's message....check the permissions/access rights. Make sure you are running QB in Administrator mode.

OK, I'll take a look.

Here's a summary:

The original problem occurred when trying to bring new company files into the computer using backup files and restore. Pretty typical method. The same file would open fine on another computer but not on this one. Quickbooks Pro 2100, Windows 7 Pro 64.

I created a Dummy Company. Could back it up OK but on restore get "Quickbooks has stopped working....."

I did these things since:

- turned off .net 3.5

- uninstalled QB

- installed .net 4

- turned .net 3.5 back on

- downloaded and installed QB 2011 Pro R9

- Verified the Dummy Company file.

- Backed up the Dummy Company file anew.

- "Quickbooks has stopped working..." upon restore of that new backup.

And, I should have also said:

- set the QB desktop shortcut to "Run as Administrator"

What type of windows user are you running under? The Run as Admin might not be enough. You may need to actually be running windows as an admin so that you have full access to your hard drive.

The User is an Administrator as well.

So now I'm thinking about simply transfering the files. .QBW .TLG .ND but I don't see .LGB or .DSN files there though so I wonder what will happen?

I've read that doing only the .QBW will only provide "financial information" whatever that means!

I have transfered the qbw file in the past without any problems. The lgb and dsn files are for networked files so they may not exist in all cases. Transferring the 3 files you list above should work. I'm still baffled as to why you are having problems.
