QB Pro 2009 Transaction log size

We recently purchased and installed QuickBooks Pro 2009. We have been using QuickBooks Pro 2006.

The computer runs Windows XP SP3 with all critical updates. QuickBooks Pro 2009 is run in single user mode. The QuickBooks Pro 2009 is updated to R7.

With 2006, when we did a backup, the .TLG file (Transaction Log) file was cleared.

We have been doing regular backups with 2009, with full verify enabled. The Company file is about 100MB and the .TLG is up to about 32 MB and seems to keep growing.

I believe we are doing exactly what is recommended in KB ID

1000691 which addresses: "The .TLG files do not get smaller after running a manual backup"

Has anyone else seen or heard of this?

Does anyone know of something else that might prevent the refreshing of the .TLG files?

Is there a work around?

The next time you perform a back up do it with full verify on. QB will delete the .TLG file and start fresh and create a tiny little new file when you begin to enter new transactions.

As stated originally, full verify is always on when doing backups Is there anything else to look for.? Is there a log somewhere to check?

Try creating a portable company file and then restore it over the original file. I tried on one of my files and it reduced the tlg file significantly.

Just to be sure I am not assuming something that is not true - Can I conclude from your proposed work around that you have seen the same issue I am experiencing which is that, at least in some cases, a verified backup by QB PRO 2009 will not reduce the .TLG file to near 0, like it did in QB PRO 2006 and like the KB article says it should?

I tested this with several of my company files with mixed results. In some cases the TLG file was greatly reduced. In one case the file disappeared totally. In several cases the file was not reduced when I made the backup file but it did when I restored the portable file. I looked in the knowledge base and found #1000466 that says "The .TLG file is reset when a portable company file is restored. The *.tlg file is not reset when a portable company file is created."

So I guess restoring a portable file is another documented method that can be used to reset the tlg file.

Thanks for your efforts and information.

As I read the information on the .TLG file, it is intended to be used by QuickBooks corporation to attempt to repair a corrupted company file using it and the the latest backup. It seems like QuickBooks PRO maintains, but does not use, the .TLG file. I have copied the company and .TLG file to a backup computer immediately after a backup. On the bacup computer, I then used Windows to delete the .TLG. When I opened QuickBooks on the company, a new, 192KB .TLG was created. Everything seed to work fine. It seems like I could probably do the same thing on the main computer. I would definetly do a test recovery from a backup file before I would try that.

If that is the case then just delete the file. The .TLG file is not used during every day operations and if missing will be recreated automatically when QB starts up again.
