Am I right in thinking that the sole trader / partnership tax year runs 5th April to 4th April ?

No. The tax year for individuals runs from 6th April to 5th April.
A sole trader/partnership can have any year end. The most popular is 5th April/31 March.
It used to be that 30th April could be the optimum, but since the advent of Self Assessment, this is no longer the case.

I changed mine from 31/8 to 31/3 in 2001 for this reason. 31/8 was beneficial when we started in 1987, but of no odds now - or so I am told.
