PAYE tax code change for pension contributions

I've made a couple of large SIPP contributions this tax year, and was hoping to get higher rate tax back on them through my tax code rather than have to wait till I do my tax return next year.

I wrote to HMRC telling them about the contributions, and offering to provide details/proof if required. I guess they can find out themselves anyway as the SIPP will reclaim basic rate tax?

They've increased my tax code, but nowhere near enough to cover the tax I'll be owed. Is there some sort of limit, or policy on adjusting tax codes for pension contributions?
