Re: Every been refused insurance?

Most insurance companies seem to ask this and expect an answer. Isnt it

I have had building and contents cover refused by most insurers for the past two years as I had a 15,000 claim for water damage caused by the flat above us in 2002. The guy in the flat above put the plug in the sink, turned on the tap and fell down dead. We were on holiday and the water flowed until he was found eight hours later. Insurers tell me that they refuse anyone who has had a claim over5K in the past five years. Derek.

I had a similar problem a few years ago when I was buying a house in Putney (South London). My structural survey indicated a possibility of subsidence in the area, which I mentioned to my insurance company - who promptly refused cover, which stalled the mortgage.

All other insurers also refused cover and refused to even send anybody to check the property itself.

Luckily, the impasse was resolved, fortuitously, at a dinner where another Building Society manager was happy to stick it on their block policy.

Perhaps things have changed now?

IMHO, it is not relevant to motor insurance but still possibly for buildings cover on the same property.

You would think that at least some of them would enquire further into the claim before refusing cover. Presumably they are worried about a recurrence of the trouble causing the claim which in your case seem most unlikely,

I also worry about a recurrence of the problem! The flat has recently been sold and the new owner is letting it out. A few weeks ago a bearded Asian man holding a screwdriver rang our bell. I understood little of what he said apart from water and upstairs. I went up with him and the combi boiler was mostly in pieces on the kitchen floor. I gathered from another man who turned out to be the owner that they were trying to find where to turn of the water before fitting a new boiler thermostat that they had purchased. "Is he a plumber"? I asked the owner. "He is a joiner" the landlord replied. Hammering went on for a couple of hours and continued the following morning as we fearfully waited for them ignite the boiler again. I was very temped to ring Transco to report the work of a non CORGI registered person working on the boiler but no doubt in this PC age that would have been deemed racist. Derek.
