If there is a sniff of redundancies, the recruitment agencies will be all over key employees - why so suspicious? What have you got to lose by speaking with them?

Exactly - one of the problems with using a recruitment agency is that some of them immediately get in touch with the company you're leaving from to try and fill the gap!

The other problem is that some of the unscrupulous ones, when used for 'outplacement' of redundant staff, immediately set to discovering who the key staff (who were =not= fired) are and headhunt those instead (or 'as well').
It could turn out to be a scam where they lead you believe there is a new job and later tell you you have to pay a fee. The job then evaporates.
