Searching for a charity or company.

I was reading about the Scottish businessman Tom Hunter who gives lots away to charity and he has set up "The Hunter Foundation" for his philanthropic ventures. I cannot find it on the Charity Comission website. So, I thought it might be a normal company but I cannot see it as Companies House.

Presumably it is registered offshore or am I doing something wrong here when searching?

Why should you? The Charity Commision regulates only charities registered in England and Wales. Scottish charities are not (quite yet) regulated.

It might well not be a company. It's a trust.

Google has little difficulty finding it, it seems to be administerd by West Coast Capital Ltd. see

It might be just a name. Registration for charities is to do with ensuring donated money is used prudently. This is his own money -- he can do with it what he likes.

Likewise, company registration is to do with limited liability, proper book-keeping etc. If you're just giving money way that's not needed either.

It is likely to be an off-shore trust, if the objectives are philanthropic, but not necessarily charitable - there are not too many jurisdictions which cater for such trusts, though Jersey does.

Nevertheless it does appear in the OSCR list. I think referring to Scotland as "offshore" takes some cheek!!

Orkneys? :)

Sorry, KA2 is not a Kirkwall postcode. But you're forgiven. From a suitable distance, a few hundred miles can seem like nothing.

It will most likely be registered in Scotland which doesn't have a charities commission.

Scotland has the "OSCR"The Office of the Scottish Charity Regulator (OSCR) is an Executive Agency under the terms of the Scotland Act 1998 and is part of the Scottish Executive Development Department. We are the regulator for Scottish Charities.

There you will find details as follows...# " SC027532 HUNTER FOUNDATION MARATHON HOUSE OLYMPIC BUSINESS PARK DRYBRIDGE ROAD DUNDONALD KA2 9AE

Rules are different about what charities have to do in Scotland... (yes, the law is different...!).

For the record, most of Scotland & at lot f England would like Scotland treated as "offshore".. but we musnae start arguing,,,

Interestingly (well, to me...) the only address the Royal Mail admit to at that postcode is "

A J T Trading Ltd Marathon House Olympic Business Park Drybridge Road Dundonald KILMARNOCK KA2 9AE"

Yours aye

Rab (100 miles north of Dundonald... )

Well, if you look up West Coast Capital Ltd at companies house, it has the same address but with a different postcode. What addresses do the Royal Mail admit to there?
