If he really wanted to tackle binge drinking (assuming that you accept that increased prices could reduce it) then he would have increased the duties on cheap alcohol and not across the board.

It's about time that employees NI was scrapped and incorporated into income tax. This would make income tax more transparent and abolish any kind of upper limits.

That would be a good trick if it could be done, but I suspect that the implementation would wipe out all of the tax benefit from the supermarkets!

As Tom E said, it'll all be forgotten imminently. Most of us are more concerned about this month's income, which for some at least shows a personal allowance increase, and for the retired a 5% pay increase.

Who, Toom? I'm 61 now, and I'm still putting money into S & S ISA. (Although less it is true, than previously).

Worst case scenario - it bumps along at about 4000 (FTSE-100) for the next five years. However, it is up 3.43% today. Lets be positive. :-)
