We are off in six weeks, my feeling is that the pound isn't going to regain any ground before then and to buy now - anyone disagree or have an opinion?

Rather that try to predict currency movements, which is always a gamble, you could save yourself about 5-6% on the exchange rate by opening a Nationwide account and putting your spending money in that, and withdraw from cashpoints in the US, instead of buying USD in advance.
