Travel insurance puzzle

In the event of a claim, am I right to assume that my travel insurance will become invalid if I fail to declare a previous or current illness, even though that illness has no bearing on the claim. e.g. illness 20 years ago - pneumonia and current claim - a broken leg. The terms that I have read state that all previous illnesses should be declared. If my assumption is correct, which I hope it isn't, then nearly all who take out travel insurance are wasting their money.

insurance will

AIUI they could only reject the claim if the non declared illness contributed to your claim - but IANAL so don't rely on this, try uk.legal.moderated.

The more important clause to watch our for is being under the influence of alcohol. If (as most people) you like the occasional drink on holiday, if you trip and break your leg while leaving a restaurant and they find you shared a bottle of wine with the meal, they could reject the claim based on it happening while under the influence of alcohol.

Not my experience with travel insurance companies - on the two occasions we've claimed it's been paid in full with zero quibble. However, it is my experience with private medical insurance in this country that they do this.
