I didn't say they were synonyms. If mammals include pigs, cows, and monkeys, it means cows are mammals. Hence, if averages include means, medians, and modes, it means medians are averages.
It doesn't mean all averages are medians, nor all mammals are cows.
For the avoidance of doubt, for "average" read "mean" in my post.
The word for this is 'hyponym' - 'median' is a hyponym of 'average'.
Just thought people ought to know that.
