"Your computer is not connected to the internet"

I buy the latest version of Quicken, every year. For the past few years, I have experienced an intermittent problem with "One Step Update." It tells em that "Your computer is not connected to the internet." In fact, I am connected, and with excellent speed too.

In past years, I was able to work around this issue by various means. For example, In Q2012, I would open the preferences pane for One Step Update. In Q2013, I can find no such work-around. I have to close and reopen Quicken. Annoying, especially so because I use a password.

Any suggestions?

Not enough information to provide much help, but here's a FAQ regarding one set of possible reasons/solutions.

And another "internet connection" related FAQ.

It's not clear what "open[ing] the preferences pane for One Step Update" is/was, or how that helped. But I don't think that any preferences from previous versions have been removed from Q2013, though they may be accessed differently now. It might help to know what specific "preference" you used.

A little bit of more information, since I have the same problem, it's HIGHLY intermittent, I can go months w/o the error.

Neither link helps as there is no problem connecting to the internet, Q just thinks there is! I have a cable modem and an always on conncection so when Q reports no connection, like the OP, I am connected.

The version of Q has no relation on the problem itself, according to the OP the latest version merely changes his work-around. My work- around is to open IE (to any web page, it makes no difference) and then click on update again, that's worked with every version of Quicken (I've had this failure as far back as I can recall.)

Thanks, I will try that.

In recent days, I have found another work-around that SOMETIMES works:

Wait.

That's it. I just wait a few minutes and try again, without restarting Quicken. Perhaps this work-around would actually work 100% of the time, if I waited long enough. Due to the open-ended nature of the work-around, it is not possible for me to verify this conjecture.

Good luck! Since this failure occurs so seldom for me, it's almost impossible to trouble shoot and probably not worth the time it would take to do so.

interesting.... have never seen it at this end -

I wonder, if in fact, the connection is NOT up at that very moment ? ie - is the cable connection always "up", or is there a timeout, and an internal re-signon past the idle time ?

It would be interesting to look at the LEDs on the cable modem and/or router and see if there is in fact a logical connection at the time of the Q error ?

On my DSL, it has a 30min timeout in the setup - and then re-connects as required. Our Tivo used to keep the connection up, as it pinged every 15min for updates. Now, my Tablet probably keeps it up also with all the background updates...

Based on the subsequent information provided in this thread, I concur that the info in the links is not likely going to help.

But just to clarify: the potential problems in the faqs covered a lot of territory that did not assume that there was a general problem connecting to the internet.

A couple of examples:

1.) Pc date/time. Has nothing to do with whether your internet connection is working, and may not affect any other programs using the internet ... but may cause Quicken to produce a message about internet connection problems.

2.) Firewall. Your internet connection may be just fine, but if your firewall settings prevent Quicken from connecting, you could get the internet connection error from Quicken.

I get this same problem if there is an advertisement from Intuit or if I start Quicken before Windows 7 has finished opening. A restart of Quicen usually clears the problem.

I've had this problem for over six months, too, and a few days I stumbled on an easy-to-do work-around that has solved the problem four out of four times -- so time to share.

After you get this message in Quicken, if your web browser is not open, open it. If it is already open, refresh the current page, or navigate to another page.

Then retry your update in Quicken.

I run Quicken in a Windows 8 virtual machine in Parallels on my MacBook Pro. If this is your environment, too, the browser you open is in the VM -- not in the Mac OS.

I uninstalled my Garmin Nuvi updating software, which had been locking up all day, and this totally solved my Quicken internet connection problem.

I run Quicken in the same Parallels environment and I'm running into the sa me problem. While opening a virtual browser window works, I use the automat ic update to sync my Quicken once a day, and i can't't be there to freshen the browser every time, and it defeats the purpose of an automatic update.

Any new suggestions since this was last discussed?
