CPA exam studying - CPAExcel

I'm looking to take the CPA exam but the first step is to study. I would like to order the CPAExcel material, I was impressed with the demo, but at $745 it is still too expensive. Not only that, but the it is another $755 to take the exam. I really hate the financial barriers used to keep people from improving their careers. Keep in mind I feel that way because I am poor.

Anyway, CPAExcel also offers all 4 textbooks for only $150. They say the study text and proficiency questions match the computer material exactly. I was talking to my mom about CPAExcel and she called them up and they said the textbooks are just a supplement to the computer course, which I think is bullshit, because it says they match exactly.

Do you think it is possible to pass the exam with just the textbooks, which I could afford to buy right now, or should I eat ramen for months and find a way, any way, to buy the computer course for 745? I've also been unsuccessful in finding a job in public accounting. I made it to the last round of interviews for an entry level auditing job, but was rejected. I have a box full of rejection letters. I have 8 months experience working as a staff accountant for a not for profit company, but finding a local position, or semi-local, has been extremely difficult. That's part of the reason I need to take and pass the CPA exam.

thanks.

I managed to pass 2 parts of the exam just on text books alone, but that's the way I study. I prefer test books to classes or other forms of forced feeding. I am finishing up the final 2 parts of the exam in this testing window. If I should fail either or both of these final parts I will probably supplement my efforts with some type of targeted software. My first 2 parts I prepared for before I got a job, now with a job I find preparation time at a premium.

Good luck with the job search.

You don't have to spend a lot of $$ - I passed all parts of the CPA exam with just a "Gleim" prep book.

Which book did you use? I was on their website but there are many.

Just for clarification for the benefit of the OP. Are you referring to the Wiley-Delaney-Gleim (now Wiley-Delaney_Worthington) or the Gleim (Gleim is now back into self publishing separate from Wiley) and competing.

FWIW, I passed on text only (Hartor Press, who are long gone) but it was when the only options were live class, text, and tape.

I passed one on Bisk and one on Wiley. So far I think I prefer Wiley.
