I'm just out of college and took a staff accounting job for a private company after months of trying to find a job. i've been shown how to do a few things, like the bank rec, other small projects using excel, great plains, etc, but i only do these things for a few days after we close. sometimes i put a few entries in when i'm told to. the rest of the time i'm not doing anything and just sitting there surfing the internet. is this normal? i want to learn things, but it feels like they don't even need me there, if i'm doing so few things. it feels bizarre.

If you have mastered the tasks you are currently doing and do them very well, then definately ask for more responsibility.
It is up to you. If you do not someone will eventually figure out that you are not doing much of anything. It would be much better if you asked for more tasks and responsibility. Frankly, your manager is kind of falling short by not making sure you are fully utilized...
Ask for more to do. Tell your boss you are bored.

You can well ask for more work to do, as the others have mentioned. But, this is generally a slower time in many smaller firms. The hellacious rush of tax season isn't that far away. Ask what you should be doing now to help gear up for it. Learning the software is good, and there may be some marketing or other preparation that can be done now.
Years ago, I found myself in the same situation. I was working for a small manufacturer that used SWAG cost accounting. In my spare time, I setup a true cost accounting system that provided them with better information on their costs on a more timely basis. Soon afterwards, I was made Cost Accountant (a new position) on my way to eventually becoming Controller.
