Peachtree and Quickbooks are good options.

However, I think you are asking the wrong question. Every business does their business differently. You need an accounting package that does business the way you do business.

The question now becomes: Which accounting package is right for me/us?

PCPA,

"Best" is in the eye of the beholder. One size does not fit all. May I suggest a few questions to ask when evaluating software?

1) What is the learning curve? A) How long will it take me or my staff to learn how to run it? B) How long will it take to get set up and trained? C) Will I need 3rd party assistance to get trained and set up? D) Does the software include any built-in training? E) Does the online "help" really help?

2) Does it fit my specific needs? A) Is it limited in the number of employees, etc. it handles? B) Will it "grow" if my company grows? C) Can I add on additional "functions" as my company changes? D) Does it have a payroll function? i) Will it print W-2 Forms at year end? ii) Will it print Form 941? E) Can I restrict certain users from certain areas? F) Can I print 1099s? G) Can the software be networked? H) Can I use a "thin client" application and use the Internet? I) Are there specific management tools in the program?

3) What are the actual costs of the software? A) What will it cost to implement? B) What are the costs of training? C) What are the costs of "entering" my cutoff data? D) What level of technical expertise does the program require? E) How many people will I need to hire? F) What about the tax tables? i) Can they be updated by me, for free? ii) Will I be forced to purchase tax tables every year G) Finally, what does the actual software cost?

4) What about the software developer? A) Are they "new" to accounting software? B) How often do they put out updates? C) How often are bug fixes made available? D) Are downloads available on the Internet? E) How was the software rated by independent reviewers?

5) What kind of service is available? A) Can I subscribe to maintenance (updates to the software)? B) Does the company have a technical support department? C) Is the Tech Support department located in India? D) Do the tech support people read a script to answer me? E) Do I reach a recording or a person when I call tech support? F) Can I subscribe to "unlimited" tech support? G) How long do I have to wait to reach Tech Support? H) How long do I have to wait for an answer from Tech Support?
