Accountancy software for new business

Hi,

I am looking for a simple to use piece of accountancy software.

I would like it to have a backend that either uses a database like SQL Server or Access or that data can be exported from easily.

My partner has more experience in business accounting, can anyone recommend a book that would provide a better understanding of business accounting.

TIA

The simplest piece of accountancy software is the one you write for yourself It only has to cope with *your* business and not the 500,000 other businesses Sage and Quickbooks have to accommodate.

Allowing a user to port across to another package is not a wise move for an accounts package. Traditionally such features, despite being loudly heralded and advertised, don't work.

People always say "Frank Wood" at this point - not me though! Why not learn on the internet?

There are a few options...

QuickBooks and Peacthree work okay, and can exoprt data. I have several clients using the software. However, if you actually have any volume (hundreds of transactions per week), they get a little weak.

Until recently, you have to go to middle market software and spend over $10K (US) for something like what you want. Those appications would include ACCPAC, Dynamics, MAS 90, OSAS, and a few others. However, Microsoft's Small Business Accounting is desinged for small businesses and uses MS SQL (desktop edition) for the database, but you can still query the database with Access.

Depends on your needs, which I am sure of, but those are a few options. There are dozens of other software applications out there, but the above are the most widely used and provide great support.
