Tax Ammendment Question

Jan 23, 2006 3 Replies

To begin with, let me give you my background, I am an engineer, not an accountant or Tax specialist.

I want to amend my 2004 tax return, but don't know if it is possible to amend my taxes to change them from married filing jointly to married filing separately. I would appreciate any help in letting me first know if it is possible, and second how best to do this.

I don't think you can amend a return from filing jointly to married filing separate. You could ask in a tax group - misc.taxes.moderated

Correct. You can not change from Married Filing Joint to Married Filing Separate after the due date has passed. **Seems you can amend the returns prior to April 15th and it'd be OK to do.**

You can however, amend a return form MFS to MFJ.
