new to MS RMS

Hi all. Am planning to put together a POS for a small store:

  • are there any "best HW/SW configurations" available?
  • does RMS use SQLServer 2005 (or prior version) as the backend?
  • is it very difficult to get all the pieces together instead of paying a certified partner to do it?
  • any advantage in registering with MS (registered member) - in terms of online labs, not for distribution software etc?
  • finally, should I consider a Store Operations solution instead of POS ?

Thanks a lot. These questions may have been answered in the past - please point me to the right place. Some others may be a bit silly :-) I apologize.

First off, I would like to say that going with a Certified RMS Partner he/she would be able to answer all of these questions and provide you with a solution that best fits your needs. (i.e. RMS or MS POS and HW)

I suggest talking with a few Certified RMS Partners, you should be able to weed out the ones that don't know the system.

From our experience we have had great success with the HW configuration below: PC: We recommend Dell. As long as it has a good onsite warranty, enough USB ports and most importantly Win XP Pro. Printer: EPSON TM-T88iii USB Scanner: Metrologic Voyageur 9540 USB CashDrawer: MMF VAL-U LINE MSR: Mini Mag Tek USB USB Label Printer: Zebra TLP 2824

SQL 2005 is not supported by MS, RMS comes with SQL MSDE 2000.

Get the Maintenance and it will come with access to the Reports Library, KB Articles and I beleive it still comes with some online training.

Adrian,

To finish what Rob mentioned,

No, there is no benefit to becoming a Register member strictly for this purpose. The RMS and POS are in the Microsoft Business Solution group. To become a Certified RMS/POS reseller, you must train and test for the product line.

RMS vs. POS, that depends on the store's needs. Again, a Certified RMS/POS reseller would be able to determine and help with that evaluation, but here's a _very_ general link that may help a bit;

Really?

Our supplier recommended we go to SQL 2005 Express for one of our databases as the size has become dangerously close to the limit of MSDE. I have upgraded 2 sites with Express and everything seems to work exactly as before...except without the MSSQL errors in the event logs, and MSSQL lock ups and crashes.

Before I do any more, is there actually some problem with SQL Express, or is it more a matter of they haven't tested it thoroughly enough to say it is OK and therefore absolve themselves of responsibility?

ozzie,

Dunno, but MS has said there will be a hotfix in April-May timeframe to move to SQL 2005.

We haven't seen any issues internally either. ;-)

If you have any problems related to your database MS will NOT help you in any way because you are not using a supported database engine.

Jeff,

On the comparision page (from your link) there is one statement that I am little confused: "Improve cashier accountability by tracking tasks performed" Where do I turn this function on?

System automatically tracks via the Logon ID (i.e. Cashier). You would just need to run reports accordingly. i.e. Detailed Sales, Item Movement....

Is there a cost to procure SQL Express 2005 or it is an option to SQL MSDE

2000?

Thanks, Adrian

Remember that RMS does NOT support it yet!

Does anyone have any experience with an IBM hardware + MS RMS software solution? How would this compare to the configuration below (Dell + others)?

For example, the SurePOS 300, compact keyboard with integrated magnetic stripe reader, 4610 receipt printer, cash drawer, 4840 pole display, LS2208 barcode scanner etc.

What about IBM on-site HW support?

Thanks.
