New MS POS

Just curious, but if I purchased the new MS POS, would I still be able to use the RMS database? Or would I have to start all over and input all the products again? We are talking over 6K items? Looking into the new MS POS for a friend. I currently own and use RMS.

You would have to start all over. mt

I assume that when you say starting all over you mean that you would prefer to not have to enter these 6K items one by one again. You can absolutely get help converting the items from the RMS database to the POS database. What you will lose is all the transaction information, but it sounds as though you are concerned about getting all your inventory, customer, and vendor information transferred over. When and if you switch your partner should be able to help you. If they can't or don't, let me know and I will help you.

I don't care about the transaction info...I want to know if it's possible to transfer the basic info...items / vendors / tax brackets / checks / The items and info...but none of the transactions...this would be for a different location, starting over. Is this possible to go from RMS to the new MS POS, or is it a lot of work? I know that it's easy to do if you go from RMS to another RMS...at least that's what I'm told.

It would take hours to extract all the information and import it back into rms. There is no direct migration path. Pick your weapon and go forth. mt

Vince,

It can probably be done. I don't know anyone one has done it. It is not the normal way of doing it, usually it would be POS => RMS.

Before you decide to buy POS, make real sure that it will do everything you currently do now. It has limited functionality in pricing, discounts, matrixes, customizing, some of your customized reports may have to be re-written from the RMS version, etc.

So this begs the question; when will RMS have the same UI and features?

Vince-

Rusty, Jeff, and Masta T all make good points. I wish that RMS and POS shared the user interface and features. I hope it is in the works. It is true that most of the time users upgrade from POS to RMS, but in essence we are talking about taking data from one database to another. Jeff is right that you will want to make sure that the features you are utilizing are still available with POS. Finally, Masta T is right that it will take time to plan the transfer, implement, and test it, but I don't think I would like to have to put 6K items and all the other information in again from scratch. So, if you find that POS is a better fit for your business, and your partner doesn't seem to want to help you transfer the data in, let me know and I will help you. This should be easier than getting the data from some of the other retail systems I have had to pull from.

MS POS has an Import feature. I've never used it, so I can't say how easy it is to use, but it will at least TRY to import data from CSV Files. There are many ways to export RMS data into a CSV file, including using the Export feature in the Reports system and saving the results of a query in Administrator.

There is no offical upgrade path between MS POS and MS RMS currently (in either direction) as far as I know, but the item data is similar enough that it should transfer cleanly.

MS POS has a setup wizard that will walk you through a lot of the basic set-up, like Taxes and Users, so importing most of that is probably not neccessary.

Rusty,

Nothing has been mentioned yet.

Although if you look at the directory structure, it says RMS 2.0. It might be closer than we think.
